At Home Start Conwy we run a Youth Club for all children aged between 7 & 16. We focus on elements of child development and create new activities and challenges every week. A strong aspect to the sessions is team building exercises, which we believe gives them the skills to create friendships and gain responsibilities. This involves our Youth Project Coordinator (Nihal), creating activities like Human table football, group skiing, orienteering, Carnival days, night trails, social game discussions, trust games and many more, all from free resources found in the surrounding areas, proving that we can do a lot with a little imagination. We hope that this shows children that the world doesn’t always have to have a label on it.
Fun is always at the forefront of our sessions, ensuring there are big smiles all round. However, we are aware that some young people can experience difficult times and we are always available to lend a caring ear to help them through it.
Alongside our usual groups, our young people have the opportunity to go on expeditions. Last summer we went on a trip to Afon Ddu Gorge, climbing up waterfalls and jumping in deep pools. It was part of a partnership with Arete outdoor education centre, and we plan to link up with companies like this again in the future. This fills the need for disadvantaged children to gain experiences they might otherwise miss.
At the end of every youth group, we always come together and sit with a drink and healthy or naughty treat, creating a civilised environment for the young people to become accustomed to positive manners.
Above all, these sessions are always free and always welcoming to anyone who wishes to partake.
